The longitudinal girders shall be ’placed so as to rest immediately on the piles. Each shall con-
sist of two pieces of 26 by 29 cm. timber held together by three 25 mm. screwbolts in each bay. An
oak-key shall be inserted between every two bolts. The girders shall be fastened to the piles by means
of shouldered tenons provided with holes in which oak-pins are to be inserted. Besides that, the joints
shall at every other pile be strengthened by two hold-fast-bolts having a diameter of ,30 mm., which shall
transpierce the whole thickness of the girder, and be fastened with a nut on its upper side, while the
head is to be nailed fast with bolts of the same kind as those with which ties and braces are fastened
to the piles. On the one side of the of the pile the head is to be notched into the tie so as to lie close
up to the side of the pile. The beams of the girders shall be joined on the tops of the piles, but both
beams must nowhere be joined above the same pile. The joints shall be executed with an oblique
scarf and two bolts of 22 mm.
To 6 piles in each of the two outmost longitudinal rows there shall be bolted mooring-piles
having a diaméter of 29 cm. Each of the two piles shall be sided so as to present a vertical joining-
surface at least 20 cm. in breadth. They are to be held together by six 30 mm. bolt; an oak-key shall
be inserted between each two bolts. The mooring-piles shall be in the plane of the group, and shall
have a length of 6 m., 0,8 m. of which shall extend above the decking. The top of the pile rising
above the platform shall be provided with a cap of cast-iron of a suitable shape; the cap is to be fast-
ened to the pile.
Across the longitudinal girders there shall be placed cross-girders of 18l/2 by 21 cm. timber.
They shall be laid with a space of 0,571 m. between each two, or seven beams in each bay at equal
distances apart. No cross-girders shall be placed above the groups of piles. The cross-girders shall be
fastened to the longitudinal ones with one 19 mm. point-bolt at every other crossing and with one 22
mm. screwbolt at each of the remaining crossings, transpiercing both the beams of the longitudinal gir-
ders. The cross-girders shall be joined with an oblique scarf and two bolts having a diameter of 19 mm.
Across the cross-girders there shall be laid a decking of 7s/< planks, placed with a space of .3
cm. between them and fastened to the cross-girders with on 18 cm. galvanized pine-spike at each cross-
ing. The planks shall be simply butted against one another above a beam, each end being fastened to
it by two 18 cm. pine-spikes.
Above this decking a 31/* cm. close cross-decking (roadway) is to be laid, the planks of which
are to be fastened with two 121/2 cm. galvanized pine-spikes at every other crossing. These planks shall
be butted against one another above the supporting deck-planks, and each plank-end shall be fastened
with two 12’/2 cm. galvanized pine-spikes. The surface of the cross-decking shall be in a level 6 m.
above low-water.
A top-edge-listing of 15x/2 by 151/2 cm. timber shall be laid along the sides and the outer end of the
pier. It shall rest immediately on the cross-girders and be fastened to them with one 19 cm. pointbolt
in every beam.
Pairs of rails shall be sunk into the decking as shown in detail on Pl. II. The gauge is 60 cm.,
and the rails, which shall be 65 mm. in height and have a weight of 7 kg. per m., shall be fastened
with railway-spikes of a size corresponding to the dimensions of the rails, to 41/2 cm. planks resting
immediately on the cross-girders and fastened to them with two 12V2 cm. pine-spikes in every beam.
At crossings of the rails and at the end of the pier the cut ends of the deck planks must be supported by
cross-pieces between the cross-girders. The platform shall be stiffened by a pair of cross-wise placed
horizontal braces of 15T/s by 151/? cm. timber resting on the topmost ties and fastened to the longitudinal
girders by oblique tenons and 19 mm. pointbolts, the ends of the braces butting against each other. The
braces shall be notched together at the crossings.
The longitudinal stiffening of the pier shall be provided partly by iron-clothed stay-piles in the
longitudinal plane, partly by crosswise placed braces in the vertical plane. The stay-piles shall be round
piles with a diameter of 29 cm. They shall be rammed down in the outmost longitudinal row but one
on either side and their number shall be twelve. They shall be fastened to the vertical piles in the same
manner as the stay-piles in the plane of the groups of piles. The braces shall be lO’/aby 21 cm. timber,
and shall be placed in every other bay in the outmost row but one on either side. The bays in which
the braces are placed shall be furnished with a pair of ties of lO1^ by 21 cm. timber resting on the
nethermost ties of the groups of piles. The braces and ties shall be fastened to the piles with 22 mm.
screwbolts. — The two outmost groups of piles shall be combined on either side by an oblique beam
of 29 by 311/2 cm. timber resting on the nethermost beam of the two outmost girders, and supporting
the crossgirders.
Both sides and the end of the pier shall be provided with a fender-work, consisting of one vertical
piece of 21 by 21 cm. timber fastened to each pile by means of four 19 mm. pointbolts, and three hori-
zontal pieces of 181/2 by 21 cm. timber, of which the topmost one covers the ends of the cross-girders
and shall be fastened to every other end with one 19mm. pointbolt. The nethermost fender-beam shall
rest on the nethermost tie-beam in the groups of piles and the third fender-beam shall be placed between
the two others, at an equal distance from both. The vertical piece shall be tenoned into the topmost
one and the nethermost one, but the middlemost piece shall be tenoned into the vertical one. The tenons
shall be provided with holes where oak-pins are to be inserted.
At the four obtuse angles of the two outmost pile-groups all three joints in the fender-work shall
