be strengthened with straps of 16 by 40 by 700 mm. galvanized flat bar-iron which shall be notched into
the fender-beams and fastened to them with three 19 mm. point-bolts at each end of the strap.
The innermost bay of the pier shall on either side be provided with a ladder, the string-boards
of which shall at the top be fastened to one of the cross-girders, which shall protrude suitably for that
purpose. At the foot the string-boards shall be fastened to one of the horizontal ties, which shall also
protrude a little. Besides that the ladder shall be propped by struts between the wall and the string-
boards. The string-boards shall be made of ItT/z by 21 cm. timber, and the rounds of 73/< by 18 cm.
planks, which shall be mortised into the string-boards. The string-boards shall be braced by three 25
mm. galvanized stay-bolts. The distance between the string-boards shall be 85 cm.; the distance between
the rounds 20 cm. The inner side of the ladders shall be provided with a strong wooden guard.
Nearest the wall the longitudinal girders shall be supported by an iron frame consisting of two
pieces of channel iron no. 26, 15 cm- apart. The channel irons shall be held together by means of six
22 mm. bolts passed through iron tubes, acting as struts opposing the compressive action of the bolts.
They shall be placed exactly horizontal and in the right height and shall be fastened to the front-wall
with six 30 mm. holding-down-bolts, 50 cm. in length. After the frame has been placed its position shall
be strengthened by a foundation-layer of a composition of 1 cement -j- 2 sand. They space between the
irons shall also be filled with the same material; but there shall be left openings on both sides wide
enough to prevent gathering of water behind the frame. Before the fastening of the longitudinal girders
the iron must be cleaned and carefully smeared twice with some preserving material according to further
direction. Each longitudinal girder shall he fastened to the iron with two 25 mm. galvanized bolts.
An iron-plate of 265 by 400 by 16 mm. shall be placed between the girders and the iron.
b) The quay alongside the Batteri-mole. Along the harbour side of the Batteri-mole, there is
to be built a quay partly supported by or leaning on the mole, as shown on plate III.
The quay-wall is to be constructed with 45 frames supporting longitudinal girders and cross-
girders over which there is to be laid a single decking of planks. The innermost supporting frame is
to be placed at a distance of 100 m from the starting-point of the mole ashore. The length of the quay
is to be 154 m, the distance between the frames being 3,5 m. The breadth of the platform is to be 9 m.
The distance between the edge of the mole and the front-edge of the quay is 14 m.
The supporting frames consist of a pile-trestle rammed down in the harbour side of the quay
and a strut-frame resting on it; the other end of the strut-frame rests on a block of concrete placed in the
slope of the mole.
The trestles consist of two 3P/2 cm piles clothed with iron-plates, which shall be rammed down
so deep as to penetrate at least V2 m into solid ground. The main piles shall have an inward slope of 1
on 12, and reach up to the decking; twelve of them shall, however, extend 0,8 m up above the decking,
and are to be employed as mooring-piles, their tops being provided with a cap of cast-iron like those of the
mooring-piles of the main pier. The other pile shall be set with a slope of 1 on 8 towards the vertical
line and shall be placed as a prop against the main pile; it shall reach up to 2,5 m. above low-water
level, being there fastened to the main pile with a wedge and three 30 mm. bolts. The
trestle shall be provided with a pair of ties of 13 by 26 cm timber, one on either side, having their
underside in a level 2,5 m above low-water. They shall be notched into the piles and fastened to them
each by means of one 25 mm bolt; they are to be placed horizontally with the other end resting on
the above-mentioned block of concrete. The strut-frame consists of 3 pieces of 23^2 by 23i/2 cm timber.
One of the struts shall be fastened at the foot to the stay-pile by means of a tenon with a pin-hole,
and, besides, to the ties with one 25 mm bolt. The other strut shall likewise be fastened at the foot to
the ties with one 25 mm bolt and rests on or butts on to the concrete-block and the vertical timber
resting on the block. The horizontal piece of the strutframe shall be fastened to the upper ends of the
struts by means of tenons with pin-holes. Besides, it shall be fastened with three 22 mm bolts to two
horizontal ties of 15x/2 by 3P/2 cm timber, one end of which is to be notched together with the pile
and fastened to it with one 25 mm bolt; at the other end the ties are to be joined to a piece of 231/? by
23’/2 cm timber resting vertically on the middle of the concrete-block and fastened at the foot to the
nethermost ties by means of one 25 mm bolt. Across the topmost ties there are to be laid 7 longitudinal
beams of 23T/2 by 23’72 cm timber resting on a piece of 2372 by 23^2 cm timber 1 m in length. These
pieces shall be fastened with one 25 mm bolt to each of the ties, and the longitudinal beams with three
22 mm bolts to the pieces. The outmost row of the longitudinal beams shall be placed close
to the piles, and the innermost beams shall rest on the tops of the vertical timbers. Cross-beams
of 13 by 1572 cm timber shall be laid across the longitudinal ones at a distance of 1 m apart from
centre to centre. They shall be fastened to the longitudinal beams with one 22 mm bolt at every other
crossing, and one 19 mm point-bolt at the remaining crossings. Across the cross-beams there is to be
laid a decking of 73/r cm planks fastened with two 18 cm pine-spikes at every crossing.
The fender-work for the harbour side of the quay-wall shall be arranged and secured like that
of the main pier, described above.
The whole length of the platform shall be strengthened with pairs of cross-wise placed hori-
zontal braces of 151/2 by 151/2 cm timber resting on the topmost ties, fastened like the corresponding
braces in the main-pier. These cross-wise placed braces are indicated on the innermost part of the plan
of the pier.
