Besides these borings a trial was made of ramming down a 50 mm. cylinder of wrought iron provided with an iron-point, at the point marked »a« on the map-sketch Plate IV. The ramming down was done with a rammer having a monkey of 100 kg., and a fall of 1 m. The cylinder was driven by hand-power through the uppermost soft layer and then rammed down. The first 10 strokes drove the cylinder 34 cm. down; at the next 10 strokes it sank 7 cm., at the next 25 strokes 8 cm. The cylinder bent, so that further ramming was impossible.
