Special Conditions.
1. Timber.
All timber shall be pine, felled during the winter time, of a perfectly sound and strong quality,
free from holes, shakes, rind-galls, and dead, loose or many large knots.
With regard to the quantity of heartwood contained the timber shall be equal to the best
merchantable quality. It may be South-Swedish or other timber of a quality not inferior to Kalmar-
timber. Timber from Norrland or other similar qualities must not be used. A wane is allowed extend-
ing over not more than half the length of the timber, and its breadth must not be more than 1/s of
the thickness of the timber. The thickness of the timber is to be measured at the middle, and it must
at the top-end be not less then 8/o of the thickness at the middle. The timbers must be straight; but
there shall, however, be allowed a bend in one direction of not more than 4 cm. on a length of 10 m.
The round piles shall be straight; they shall measure as stipulated at the middle without bark,
and the decrease in thickness from middle to top-end must not be more than 1 cm. per running metre.
Planks both for supporting-deck and roadway shall be straight and squared, and shall measure
the stipulated transverse dimensions throughout their whole length.
If required, the Contractor must substantiate in what parts the timber has grown. The timber
will be examined by the Control, who may bore into all knots, cut into every metre of the whole
length of the timber, and cut off ends, not longer, however, than 5 cm., without compensation to the
Contractor for deterioration in value that may possibly be caused by this examination.
11. Timber-work.
All timber shall be exactly shaped, and all joinings shall be executed with particular care accor-
ding to the further instructions of the Control.
All visible planes on fender-work and top-edge-listings shall be planed and their edges rounded.
All joining-surfaces and joints being more than 0,5 m. above low-water level shall be smeared
with carbolineum before the joining. After being placed, all timber being more than 1,5 m. above low-
water level and which is not clothed with iron, shall be smeared twice all over with carbolineum.
The piles shall be rammed down exactly in a line and so as to stand thoroughly fast. The
ramming down shall be done with a monkey of a suitable weight in proportion to the dimensions of the
piles and with a fall adapted thereto. The piles shall be driven so deep as to penetrate at least */3 m-
into the solid ground. Pile-shoes and hoops must be applied to such an extent as may be deemed
necessary.
Supporting timbers and ties shall of the largest possible lengths; where joints can't be avoided,
they shall be made by scarfing with oak-keys and two galvanized screwbolts. The length of the scarf
shall be at least 21/s times the breadth (the largest transverse dimension) of the timber. Parallel courses
of scarfed timbers shall as far as possible be arranged so as to break joint or not to have the joints flush.
All piles shall be clothed with galvanized iron-plates, which shall measure (in ungalvanized state)
1,63 mm. on the parts of the piles being from 3 m. to 1,5 m. above low-water level, and 1,22 mm. (in
ungalv. state) on parts being between 1,5 m. above low-water level and 0,5 m. in the bottom. Before
the placing of the plates, the bark of the piles must be stripped off and all projecting knots levelled by
planing.
111. Iron materials and Iron-work.
The materials used for bolts and straps shall be wrought charcoal iron with a breaking-weight
of 3600—3800 kg. per sq. cm. and an elongation by rupture of 15—18°/o. It must in a cold state bear being
