upon. All this has been done away with now, and with
the gyroscopic compass it is possible to set a course to a
fraction of a degree.
Surface navigation has been made much easier by pro-
viding a large bridge rigged on the top of the conning
tower and fitted with suitable cover and weather cloths.
It is a great improvement over the small low platform
formerly fitted, barely out of reach of a washing sea and
affording practically no protection from the weather.
