the whole crew of a vessel nearly perished in consequence ; and the
other, from my match being extinguished by the deluge of rain falling
at the time, and consequently a portfire could not be lighted. /To
prevent future disappointments, explosion is to be effected by a mixture
of oxymuriatic of potash and sugar candy, which produces immediate
inflammation on coming- in contact with sulphuric acid.
It is next necessary to explain the application of the various appara-
tus to the purposes of gaining communication with a distressed vessel
driven on a lee-shore, and for the rescue of the crew.
When the rope is thrown on board, the crew, if not extremely ex-
hausted, will at once secure it to some part of the wreck ; and, indeed,
it is almost unnecessary to offer anything else than a rope, as the
inventive genius of a sailor would, in most cases, supply every other
deficiency.
