The duct a is made either of steel or cast iron, and is of a diameter of 6, 8, or 10 in. for capacities of 4, 6, and 10 tons per hour respec- tively. The tank b is made either of steel or concrete. In installations for cold climates the recep- tacle b is fitted with a steam pipe to prevent the damp ashes from freezing together, which would prevent them leaving the Fig. 309. An important feature of the Darley Suction Conveyor is that while removing the ashes, it also removes the hot gases escaping from the ash hoppers, which are such a serious nuisance in the basements of boiler-houses.
