554 THE MECHANICAL HANDLING OF MATERIAL Movable Tip at Cardiff.—This was built by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Ltd., and is similar to the tips previously described. The capacity is 19 tons, whilst the lift of the cradle is 31 ft. This tip is very like one of those at Rotterdam, with the exception that the lifting machinery, which consists of a ram and cylinder with multiplying Fig. 779. Movable Tip at Cardiff. sheaves, is placed on the back of the framing. It is mounted on wheels, which allow it to be moved to and fro on the quay to reach the hatchways of vessels, there being on the quay a number of lines, opposite to any one of which the hoist can be placed; these lines radiate from turntables communicating with the full and empty railroads.
