BEM SZOBRA MAROS-VÂSÂRHELYEN. A piskii gyözönek, a magyar sza- badsâgért harczolö hös len- gyel tâbornoknak, «Bern apô»- nak, a székelység fôvârosâban gyönyörü szobrot âllitott a nemzet kegyelete. A hos had- vezér âgyuival van megörö- kitve a szobormüvön, azokkal az âgyukkal, a melyekkel olyan nagy pusztitâsokat okozott az ellenség soraiban. «Ha a piskii hid elveszett, akkor elveszett Erdély is», ezek voltak a hos tâbornoknak szavai az emlé- kezetes piskii csata napjân. A hid nem veszett el. Emlékét hâlâval örzi meg a magyar nemzet. Szobra leleplezésére a a lembergi és krakkdi lengyel diåksåg küldôttséget menesz- tett. DIE STATUE DES GENE- RALS BEM IN MAROS- VÂSÂRHELY. — Die Pietät der Nation hat dem Helden von Piski, dem tapferen pol- nischen General, der für unsere Freiheit kämpfte, ein Würdiges Denkmal in der Hauptstadt derSzékler errichtet. Hier steht er inmitten seiner Kanonen, die in den Reihen des Feindes solch’ furchtbareVerheerungen verursachten. — «Wenn die Brücke von Piski verloren ist», so sagte der kühne Feldherr am Tage jener, nach diesem Orte benannten denkwürdigen Schlacht», — «dann ist’s auch mit Siebenbürgen zu Ende». Doch die Brücke blieb unser und nie werden wir Bem’s Verdienste darob vergessen. Zur Enthüllung des Denkmals trafen auch Deputationen der Studentenschaft aus Krakau u. Lemberg ein, alle in pracht- vollen polnischen National- kostümen.Es war eine rührende Scene, als die begeisterten Jünglinge die alten Honved- veteranen, die unter ihrem grossen Landsmann gekämpft, umarmten und dessen Fahne von 1848, die jene alten Sol- daten nach Maros-Vasarhely mitbrachten, mit ihren Küssen bedeckten. LA STATUE DU GÉNÉRAL BEM AMAROSVÄSÄRHELY. Notre gravure représente le superbe monument érigé par la Nation, au chef-lieu du pays des Székelys, à la mémoire du général polonais Bem, en reconnaissance des éminents services rendus par ce valeu- reuxsoldat à la cause de l’indé- pendance. Le héros de Piski est représenté au milieu de ses canons qui décimèrent les rangs ennemis. «Si le pont de Piski est perdu disait le vaillant capitaine le jour de la bataille sanglante connue sous ce nom, c’en est fait de la Transyl- vanie». Ce point stratégique fut conservé et le nom de Bem est pour jamais attaché à ce glorieux fait d'armes. L’inau- guration du monument eût lieu en présenee de députations d’étudiants de Cracovie et de Lemberg, tous en brillants costumes nationaux ; il se pro- duisît alors une scènetouchante, lorsque ces jeunes gens en- thousiasmés embrassèrent avec effusion les vieux vétérans Honvéds, tous anciens soldats ayant servi sous les ordres de leur vaillant compatriote, et couvrirent de baisers le glo- rieux drapeau de 1848, apporté alors à Maros-Vâsârhely. BEM'S STATUE AT MAROS- VÂSÂRHELY.— The nation’s piety has raised, at Maros- Vâsârhely, the centre of the Széklerland, a beautiful Statue to the memory of Father Bem the victor of Piski, the polish hero, who fought for the li- berty of Hungary. The gallant general is surrounded on this monument by the guns, with which he inflicted such ter- rible losses to the enmy. «If we lose the bridge of Piski, Transylvania will be lost» were the words of the hero, on the memorable day of the battle ofPiski, and the bridge was not lost. His name is living in the memory of a grateful nation. The polish students of Lemberg and Krakau, sent deputations to the inaugura- tion festival of the statue. Tra- velling in their pretty polish national dress, they met the deputations of honvéd veterans at the railway station of Nagy- vårad. It was a stirring scene to see the youths embrassing and kissing the veteran heros and the tattered flag, which the latter had brought with them in honour of the heroic general of the war of indepen- dence and under which they fought at Piski.
