DAS INNERE DES PECSER (FÜNFKIRCHNER) DOMES. — Ein Fremder, der aus weiter Ferne hieher kam, um diese grossartige Kirchenhalle zu sehen, äussertc sich entzückt: «Wer ein Wunder der Baukunst sehen will, der muss nach Pécs gehen !» Und in der That, die am Fusse des mächtigen Mecsekgebirges hingelagerte schöne Stadt besitzt ihr grösstes Kleinod in dieser romanischen Cathedrale, die noch unter König Stefan dem Heiligen begonnen wurde. Es ist noch nicht erwiesen, ob der erste Ungarnkönig das majestätische Gotteshaus von Grund auf neu errichten liess, oder ob derselbe die Kirchenwände über die schon vorhanden gewesenen altrömischen Fundamente aufführte. * i« L’INTÉRIEUR DE LA CATHÉDRALE DE PÉCS. — «Que tous ceux qui veulent voir une merveille de l’art se rendent à Pécs» a dit un étranger de distinction venu de très loin pour admirer cette superbe cathédrale. Cette énonciation caracté- rise suffisamment ce chef-d’oeuvre. La jolie petite ville de Pécs située au pied du Mont Mecsek possède en effet un joyau inestimable en sa cathédrale dont la con- struction remonte au règne de St. Étienne, premier roi de Hongrie. — On n’est pas cependant fixé sur la question de savoir, si ce roi très chrétien, a fait ériger cette église sur d’anciennes fondations romaines, ou, s’il a fait procéder aussi aux fonda- tions de l’édifice. THE INTERIOR OF THE CATHEDRAL AT PÉCS (FÜNFKIRCHEN). — A tourist who once came to see this magnificent Cathedral, exclaimed «He who wants to see the terrestral Paradise, ought to corne here». Truly the gem of this beautiful town, situated at the foot of the mighty Mecsek mountain-range, is this romanic Church, which was begun during the reign of King Stephen the Saint. It is not quite certain, whether this King built the Church on its own foundation, erecting it thereon, or whether he built it upon the walls of an old roman structure, already then exi- sting, probably a roman Church, but there is no doubt that this Churcho is ne of the oldest in the Country.
