PANORAMA VON FIUME. — In der stillen, kleinen Bucht des geschützten nordöstlichen Endes des tiefblauen, durch seine Meeresschönheiten weit berühmten Quarnero, der ausgedehnten Meeres- küste entlang, liegt Fiume, die schönste Perle der St. Stefanskrone, die einzige, aber auch in ihrer wahrlich phänomenalen Entwicklung unerreichbare Hafenstadt Ungarns mit ihren im modernen Renaissance-Style ^erbauten Palais und den älteren, an den levantischen Geschmack erinnernden Gebäuden der Berglehne. Hunderte von Dampfschiffen, Seglern und Barken wimmeln im lebhaften Hafen zwischen dem Quai und den Molen dieses Corpus separatum der ungarischen Krone, dessen Einwohnerzahl sich seit kaum .15 Jahren auf über 31,000 verdoppelt hat. In kurzer Erwähnung fliegen wir über die grossartigen Waarenmagazine hinweg, welche durch die Stadt sich hinziehende Geleise mit dem Bahnhofe der kgl. ungar. Staatsbahnen verbinden; bald sehen wir die nautische Academie das neue Palais des kgl. ungar. Gouverneurs, das im Barockstyle erbaute Theater. Oberhalb der neuen Stadt erhebt sich die Gomha mit ihren alterthümlichen Gebäuden und engen Gässchen, wo die Kuppeln der St.Vitus- und Modestus-Kirchen sichtbar sind, in deren Nähe sich das uralte Castell, jetzt Staatsgefängniss, befindet. Unterhalb desselben steht das Rathhaus des Municipiums mit der Fla^ensäule■ dann sehen wir die Prachtbauten der Via del Corso und westlich hievon jenseits des Bahnhofes eine unbegrenzte Reihe von Industrie-Etablissements. Und all dies umgrenzt das reine Blau des rauschenden Meeres und die liebliche Flora des südlichen Himmels am Fusse das rauhen Karstgebirges. *,j^ ’n sf> THE PANORAMA OF FIUME — The pearl of the St. Stephen’s crown, Fiume is situated on the shores of a small and quiet, but well protected bay, in the north-eastern corner of the beautiful «Quarnero « This rapidly rising town of 31,000 inhabitants, is the only seaport Hungary possesses. On our illustration we see, in the picturesque background, the bare rocky slopes of the Karst with the scattered groups of houses, of several villages, and Terzatto the sacred shrine of mariners, near it is the ancient Citadel. The foreground of the picture is occupied, by the palaces of the town built in the Renaissance style, and by many ancient buildings of oriental architecture. The port, between seawalls and breakwater is the scene of busy life, many hundreds of seagoing vessels and smaller crafts entering and leaving it. We see before us the spacious warehouses, standing on the Rudolf and Zichy wharves, further on the Marine palace and the Governor s Mansion, the Theater built in Baroque style and many other fine buildings. On the Via Fiumara we meet with the characteristic life of a seaport. Above this new town rises the Gomila with her narrow lanes, ancient buildings and the churches of Vitus and Modestus, under it stands the Town-hall with the flag-column before it. From there stretches westwards. the magnificent Via del Corso, studded with fine buildings,and further on, beyond the railway station, we find many industrial Establishments of importance, such as the State Tobacco factory the rice-ginning, the starch factory, the petroleum refinery, and many others, all testifying to the great progress, this town has made, during the last few decades. The blue sky spanning it, hightens the charmes of this delightful Panorama.
