616 THE MECHANICAL HANDLING OF MATERIAL The shaft e works in two slide blocks G, which slide between guide bars h h ; bolted to these guide bars are two distance bars K k which carry shaft f. The apparatus is suspended by chains with counterbalance weights over chain wheels m m, and is raised or lowered by winch o. The hinged plates lower the coal after the manner of an inverted elevator, and afterwards fold up on their hinges on the return side, so that the coal can be taken very nearly to the back of the wagon. This appliance, though dealing satisfactorily with coal of a moderate size, is not well adapted for handling very large pieces. Figs. 869 and 870. Side and Front View of Soar’s Loader.
